通称・上野公園。江戸時代から「上野の山」といえば桜の名所として親しまれてきた。当初は隣接する寛永寺やその周辺を中心とした小さな公園だった。現在では、博物館や美術館なども建ち並ぶ広大な公園となったが、今なお桜の名所として、花見シーズンには100万人もの花見客が訪れる。花見のメッカをイメージして、今回は上野公園前の交番近くにあるシダレザクラを造形化した。

Also known as Ueno Park, Ueno Hill has been celebrated for its cherry blossoms since the Edo period. Back then, it was a small park stretching around the nearby Kanei Temple and its surrounding area. It is now a huge park that accommodates the museums and receives over one million visitors every spring, as it is a popular spot for viewing the cherry blossom. The figure is modeled after the weeping cherry tree near the police box located in front of Ueno Park, which is a key site for cherry-blossom viewing.

JR上野駅の公園口から上野公園に入ってすぐのところに「国立西洋美術館」がある。1959年以来、国内唯一の西洋美術を対象とする国立美術館として、松方コレクションを中心とする絵画や彫刻などを収蔵、展示している。2016年には世界文化遺産にも登録された。前庭にはロダン作《考える人》などの彫刻が展示されている。《考える人》は《地獄の門》から独立したものである。

The National Museum of Western Art is located within Ueno Park, almost touching its entrance near JR Ueno Station. Established in 1959 as Japan's only national museum specializing in Western art, its galleries feature paintings and sculptures centered on the Matsukata Collection. In 2016, the museum's building was inscribed on the World Heritage List as a cultural heritage. Sculptures including The Thinker by Auguste Rodin are displayed in the forecourt of the museum. The Thinker was set apart from The Gates of Hell.

上野といえばパンダ！と思いつく程、上野とは縁が深く国民的人気動物のジャイアントパンダ。日本に初めてやってきたのは1972年（昭和47年）、パンダを一目見ようと全国から観光客が訪れ、上野動物園には長い行列ができるほどのパンダブームとなった。それ以来、上野のマスコットとして親しまれている。上野駅や周辺のあちこちにあるパンダのモチーフを見つけてみるのも面白い。

THe giant panda, one of the nation's most popular animals, is so closely associated with Ueno that it is almost synonymous with it. When Ueno Zoo welcomed the first panda in Japan in 1972, it caused a sensation, and tourists visited the zoo from all over the country and formed long lines just to take a look at the panda. Ever since then, the animal has been popular as the mascot of Ueno. Searching for the pandas that can be found in the station and around the town is one way to enjoy Ueno.

中生代の最後に北アメリカに生息した最大の獣脚類恐竜で、その大きさだけでなく、指が２本しかなく著しく短い前あしも特徴である。上野公園噴水広場の東側に位置する国立科学博物館の地球館３階には、現在のところ最も完成度の高い復元のティラノサウルス・レックスが、子どものティラノサウルスと一緒に展示されている。地下１階の恐竜展示フロアにはしゃがんだ姿勢のティラノサウルスも。

The tyrannosaurus is the largest theropod dinosaur, which lived throughout North America towards the end of the Mesozoic Age. In addition to its size, the species is characterized by its extremely short forelimbs, which only have two digits. On the third floor of the Global Gallery in the National Museum of Nature and Science, located to the east of the Ueno Park fountain area, the fossil replica of Tyrannosaurus Rex, which is currently the most faithful replica, welcomes visitors with a baby Tyrannosaurus. In the dinosaur section on the B1 floor of the gallery, you can see the Tyrannosaurus in a squatting pose.

上野駅の開業は1883年（明治16年）。関東大震災で全焼し、今の上野駅は昭和初期に再建されたもので、改装を重ねてきた今でもそこかしこに当時の面影を見ることができる。今回は、東京の北の玄関口として、東北・上信越地方から多くの若者が上京してきた頃の上野駅を再現。背景の駅を思いっきり小さくして遠近感を強調することでノスタルジックな雰囲気に仕上げている。

The station opened in 1883. After the destruction of the entire building in the fires caused by the Great Kanto earthquake, the current station building was reestablished in the beginning of the Showa period (1926–1989). Although the building has undergone a number of refurbishments, it still shows traces of how it looked like in the old days. This figure is a reproduction of the Ueno Station building back when the station welcomed young people moving from the Tohoku and Joshinetsu regions to Tokyo as the northern gateway to Tokyo. The figure has a nostalgic air because its sense of perspective is emphasized by making the station building in the background extremely small.

土偶とは人形をした土製の焼き物で、女性を誇張、あるいはデフォルメした像が多い。「遮光器土偶」は、眼鏡をかけているように大きく表現された目に特徴があり、北方民族のイヌイットが雪中の光除けに着用した「遮光器」に似ていることからこの名で呼ばれている。教科書でもおなじみのこの土偶は、上野公園に隣接する東京国立博物館に所蔵されている。

Figurines are humanoid figures made of clay, and are often hyperbolized or deformed images of women. A goggle-eyed figurine is characterized by its magnified eyes, which make it look as if the figure is wearing spectacles. The figurine is called "goggle-eyed" because those magnified eyes are reminscent of the goggles worn by the Inuit from northern countries to protect their eyes from light reflecting off the snow. This well-known figurine from the history textbook is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, located in Ueno Park.

Izuei is a 290-year-old restaurant specializing in Unagi (eel) that was established in the mid-Edo period. The restaurant launched its business because the nearby Shinobazu Pond had a natural supply of eels back then. The secret behind the delicious grilled Unagi of Izuei is in its original grilling technique, which has never been revealed by the restaurant. You should definitely try the light, savory grilled Unagi prepared according to the secret recipes refined by generations of chefs and underpinned by the nearly 300-year-old tradition.

新幹線開通以前の上野駅といえば、東北などへ向かう多くの特急列車が乗り入れ「北への玄関口」として親しまれた。当時の特急列車を象徴するのが、「ゴハチ」の愛称で親しまれた旅客用電気機関車のEF58形。今回は青色＋クリーム色の「一般色」の車体を再現。現在、大宮の鉄道博物館で展示されているEF58形89号機は、EF58形当初の標準色である茶色に塗装されている。

Before the opening of the Shinkansen line, Ueno Station was affectionately referred to as the gateway to the north, as many limited express trains heading to Tohoku and other northern regions departed from the station. The Class EF58, nicknamed the Gohachi, is the passenger electric locomotive that symbolizes the limited express trains of the time. The figure is a replica of the body painted in the standard blue and cream. The EF58 89 displayed in the Railway Museum in Omiya is painted in brown, which was the original standard color of the Class EF58.
