創建は593年、1400年以上もの歴史を誇る。日本で唯一、潮が満ち引きする場所に建つ海上社殿は、海の青と社殿の朱のコントラストが美しく世界遺産にも登録されている。沖合約200mには大鳥居が立ち、嚴島神社を参拝する際にはこの鳥居をくぐることが作法とされていた。現在も、海の穏やかな時期に「ろかい船」で大鳥居をくぐる体験や、干潮時には大鳥居まで歩いて渡ることができる。

Erected in 593, the shrine boasts over 1,400 years of history. It is Japan's only shrine built on the sea where the tides ebb and flow, highlighting the beautiful contrast between its vermillion paint and the blue sea. The shrine is also a designated World Heritage site. The otorii stands about 200 m from the coast. Walking under the otorii was once a part of the ritual when visiting Itsukushima Shrine. Today, it is still possible for visitors to sail under the otorii by rowboat when the sea is calm or to walk to it at low tide.

広島みやげの定番「もみじ饅頭」。その由来は明治時代に遡り、初代総理大臣・伊藤博文が宮島の紅葉谷を訪れた際に寄ったお茶屋で、お茶を差し出した娘の手を見て「紅葉のようにかわいい手、焼いて食べたら美味しかろう」といった冗談をヒントに、菓子屋がもみじ型の菓子を作ったのだそう。今では昔ながらのこしあんの他、変わり種のもみじ饅頭も数多く販売されている。

A classic souvenir from Hiroshima is momiji-manju. It dates back to the Meiji era. When Hirobumi Ito, the first prime minister of Japan, visited a teahouse during his visit to Momijidani, Miyajima, he saw the hands of the little girl who served his tea and jokingly said, “Her hands are adorable, just like maple leaves. Baking them would definitely turn them into buns that were good enough to eat.” It is believed that a confectioner drew an inspiration from his joke and created these maple leaf-shaped buns. In addition to the traditional strained bean paste filling, a number of other unique momiji-manju are also available for purchase.

広島を代表する食文化・お好み焼き。人口あたりのお好み焼き店の数は全国でもダントツの1位。広島のお好み焼きは、薄く焼いた生地に肉・卵、たっぷりのキャベツ、そして焼きそばなど具材を“重ね焼”するのが特徴。また、そのお好み焼きに欠かせないのがソース。お好み焼きのために開発されたお好みソースの定番「オタフクソース」も、もちろん広島ブランドである。

Hiroshima’s food culture is best represented by okonomiyaki, as the city boasts by far the greatest number of okonomiyaki restaurants per capita in Japan. The ingredients in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki are characteristically piled on top of each other and include a thin, grilled pancake, meat, egg, a generous amount of cabbage and yakisoba noodles. Okonomiyaki sauce is the essential condiment to serve with okonomiyaki. Otafuku Sauce, specifically developed for okonomiyaki, is also a Hiroshima-based brand.

第二次世界大戦時の広島県・呉を舞台にした、こうの史代氏の漫画を原作とし2016年にアニメ映画化された作品。公開後大きな反響を呼ぶ。
18歳で呉に嫁いだ少女・すずを主人公に、戦時中の広島での市民の日常生活が描かれているが、映画制作に際し、片渕須直監督自ら作品に登場する場所を訪れて当時の街並みなど徹底的に調べ、リアリティを追求したのだそう。そうして描かれた呉の風景が感じられるシーンを造形化。

This story was turned into an animated film in 2016, based on the manga by Fumiyo Kono, which unfolds in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, during World War II. The film was a sensation when it was released.
It portrays the daily lives of the citizens of wartime Hiroshima, featuring Suzu, the main character, an 18-year-old bride in Kure. Sunao Katabuchi, the director, is said to have visited the places that appeared in the story himself prior to filming in a bid to carry out thorough research. He simply wished to most accurately portray the town during that time period in his film.
As a result of his efforts, the film successfully depicts the landscape of Kure, which has become a landmark.

古くは平安地代から天然の良港として栄えた尾道港。尾道と対岸の向島との間がわずか200ｍほどの尾道水道は、狭い水路に今も多くの船が行き交う。
尾道と向島や瀬戸内の島々とを結ぶ渡船（フェリー）は、市民にとって欠かせない交通機関であり、また、尾道を舞台とした映画やドラマにもしばしば登場する。ロケ地巡りとして訪れる人も多く、尾道を代表する風景のひとつ。

Onomichi Port has thrived as one of the top natural harbors since the Heian era. Onomichi Suido, a narrow water channel about 200 meters wide, lies between Onomichi and Mukaishima. Even today, numerous ferries travel to and fro.
Those that connect Onomichi with Mukaishima and other islands in the Setouchi region are an indispensable means of transportation for area residents.
