The Kaminarimon Gate of Sensoji temple is world-renowned symbol of Tokyo. Having been destroyed by fire several times during the Edo Era (1603 to 1868), 100 years after the last fire, this gate was reconstructed in 1960 by Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic, who also offered the familiar large lantern to the temple. Its official name is the Furaijinmon, and statues of Fujin (the Wind God) and Raijin (the God of Thunder) are placed on either side of the gate.

Since then, the avenue has changed with the times. Here we see a recreation of Taisho Era (1912 to 1926) Nakamise Shopping Avenue, when the shops were Western-style brick buildings. Compare it with the current Nakamise Avenue, symbolized by the illuminated signs and stone paving.
